Pure SPYY

SPYY is at it again with another great yo-yo. Apart from making ridiculously good yo-yos, they have also pushed the envelope of design with yo-yos like the Radian Super Lite and Pistolero.

Now they hit us with the Pure. Jon Rob’s new signature yo-yo with follows last weeks announcement that he has left Anti-Yo and is now part of SPYY. The Pure is design incorporates a perfectly machined metal cap that seamlessly fits the yo-yo to give it a “solid” look.

Now you have more then just color options with the OneDrop M1. You can get either .555 recessed (left) Or a deeper, narrower, groove (right).

Along with the new response set up, there is a new silicone sticker that fits into the groove.

These are available at OneDropYoYos.com and soon at retailers.

I’d like to bring to your attention a company called Aero. It become obvious right off the bat that these yo-yos are rebrands of Aoda yo-yos. Aoda is know for bootlegging quite a few differ plastic and metal yo-yos (Yo-Yo Factory, SPYY, Yo-Yo Jam, Duncan, Dif-e-Yo). But with the arrival of their sub brand Aero, they have thrown some more original designs in the mix.

This is the Blue Sky. it has some similar characteristics to a Yo-Yo Jam Speedmaker. But it’s not celcon. It comes with a D sized bearing (SPYY/Hspin) and flush response rings. Using slight shape influences does not strike me as “bootlegging” and I feel this is an original, non-infringing, yo-yo from Aoda.

In contrast this is a blatant Duncan Freehand Zero knock off. The Freehand shape has become a cornerstone in smooth curved yo-yos (Yo-Yo Jam Projam, Shinwoo Phantom, and numerous aluminum yo-yos). But do we talk about these as “bootlegs”? What seems to be the downfall of these bootleg companies is there direct adaptation of key design elements or infringement on a patent. The Freehand cap is iconic and instantly recognizable. With a little different approach they could have really made a yo-yo that doesn’t instantly have the bootleg stamped on it.

This yo-yo, the Hill and River, doesn’t have any design elements that link it to a preexisting yo-yo. The thing with this is the metal rims.

And finally in contrast, their obvious Hitman knock off.
